A Call to Prayer
compiled by Milka RindzinskiAre any among you suffering? They should pray.
Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. --James 5:13Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end
keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. --Ephesians 6:18
During the GAMCo and MWC General Council meetings in Guatemala, a significant portion of time was dedicated to prayer. Worship services, Bible studies, sermons, conferences, life stories, reports, business sessions, projected activities, caucus meetings and other activities and times of sharing led to expressions of thanksgiving and requests for intercessory prayer. In that spirit, Courier invited the participants to submit suggestions for prayer. Parts of them were published in Courier 2000/3. This is the second portion of them to be published. Some of the requests have been updated. Our intention is to make this column a regular feature of Courier. We invite readers to send prayer suggestions for future issues.
Evangelization and Missions
- Please pray for Brazilian missionaries to Mozambique, Rosa and Pastor João de Brito, and for the church there. There is some conflict between local leaders and the missionaries. Please pray that peace and justice will prevail and that the relationship may return to normal. The Brazilian Board of Missions (JMMI) needs God's wisdom to mediate in this process. Please pray particularly for Rosa, who recently had an appendectomy. On top of that, she is recovering from a malarial infection. (Antonio Carlos de Faria, Brazil)
- The Mennonite Brethren conference has targeted Toronto as a "Key City" where church-planting is needed. Fifty thousand or more people arrive in Toronto from all over the world every year. Pray for director Ewald Unruh as he recruits church-planters, raises funds and discerns priority areas. Goal: 10 churches in 5-10 years. (David Wiebe, Canada)
- The Brethren in Christ Church in Canada is seeking to plant 20 new churches in the next decade. Their desire is to have at least some of these congregations be multi-ethnic. This effort is part of the North American BIC Church's goal of planting 100 new churches in the next ten years. (Bishop Darrell Winger, Canada)
Peace and Justice
- Pray that there will be no more discrimination of any kind and for any reason in our congregations, in our conferences, in church and in society worldwide, and that we will respect each other and be open to dialogue as necessary steps for working cooperatively on peace. (Piet Beun, The Netherlands)
- The Brethren in Christ (BIC) church in India faces increasing persecution. One BIC pastor has been killed. Pray for these sisters and brothers. (Bishop Darrell Winger, Canada)
- Pray that the power of God will defeat the powers of evil and darkness behind the hatred, violence and warfare in Colombia. Pray that the Lord will enable our churches to be faithful to Him and the Gospel and to spread their conviction to other churches. (Peter Stucky, Colombia)
Finances and Stewardship
- The government gave a lot without a cost to the Protestant Anabaptist Church in Ivory Coast to build our facilities (church and offices), provided we have established ourselves in it within five years. The year (2000) is the deadline for us to build. Please pray that financial resources may be gleaned so that the lot is not taken from us, and that the deadline may be extended. (Eba Raymond, Church President, Ivory Coast)
- Brother Asuncion Alcoser, pastor of the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Orange Walk, Belize, feels called to fiilltime dedication to his church and to mission efforts. Please pray that financial resources are made available to make that possible.
- Sikalongo Bible Institute was founded in January 1968 to train leaders who in turn will serve the Church. The school is located at Sikalongo Mission in Choma Zambia. The vision of the Bible Institute is to train, equip and build men and women spiritually for service and ministry. It is a denominational Institute of the Brethren In Christ Church of Zambia, sponsored by the Board for World Missions (USA) and the Zambian Brethren In Christ Church. Pray that the Holy Spirit be present in the faculty and among the students, leading them into true spiritual vitality as they teach and learn. (Thuma Hamukan'andu, Zambia)
- Women in seven churches of the Lengua Evangelical Mennonite Conference are asking for help and prayer to build two houses to carry out their activities, which include teaching children, Bible courses, meetings, Sunday school retreats, etc. (Walter Ortiz, Paraguayan Chaco)
- Pray for our many pastors who are living on less than US$5 per month. Especially that God will raise up men and women who commit themselves to giving and providing for pastors, particularly in the rural area. (Enock Shamapani, Zambia)
Partnership
- Brethren in Christ churches around the world are working at establishing church-to-church forums and mechanisms. Our desire is to have all national BIC churches dialogue and interact as equal partners. Pray for these developments. (Bishop Darrell Winger, Canada)
