Learning from the Baptists
by Ross T. Bender

It is somewhat surprising that these large church bodies numbering in the millions should wish to converse with a relatively small body such as MWC. It is a rare opportunity to share our stories and our beliefs with other Christian world communions' members. Perhaps it is simply curiosity on their part (as well as on ours) but I am certain it is something more. We indeed do have a story to tell (many of them) from our early history, as well as from our life and witness in the modern world. Of special interest to our conversational partners is our peace witness as well as our emphasis on service.
BWA representatives in particular were eager to hear these stories and even to recommend that our communions join together in a common service project. We Mennonites were confronted with the fact that the Baptists had outstripped us in numbers (43 million to 1 million) even though the Mennonites started a century earlier. The reason is that Baptists never lose an opportunity to proclaim the gospel and to extend an invitation to accept Christ.

Ross T. Bender, Goshen, Indiana, U.S.A., is a past president of MWC.
