How can you participate?

A call to prayer
Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful?
They should sing songs of praise. — James 5:13

From around the world come these requests for prayer on behalf of brothers and sisters who are facing difficult problems or situations.

  • In July, youth from many different tribes and ethnic groups that identify with the Mennonite church in the Congo will gather for the first time. Organizers ask the world community to pray that God will be present and allow for a successful inter-Congolese dialogue among the participants.

  • The MWC Executive Committee and related groups will be meeting in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, the end of July and beginning of August. Pray that God will give the members of these groups wisdom for the decisions they need to make in relation to next year's Assembly 14, scheduled for the same location.

  • Hunger and a servere shortage of maize is affecting as much as 70 percent of Malawi's population, including the Brethren in Christ church. Many cannot attend church and other meetings because they are out collecting food, reports Pastor Wonderford Saliva, an area overseer. Pray for Pastor Saliva and other BIC leaders in Malawi as they work with their congregations during this difficult time.

  • "We count on the prayers of our brothers and sisters," says David Dutras, who with his wife, Haydée, is serving in Barcelona, Spain. The Dutras, from Argentina, are helping to establish the Institut Casa Biblica, an inter-denominational biblical and theological house of study. Currently with eight day students but with prospects for three more day students and five boarding students, the institute is working closely with Mennonite seminaries in Latin America and the United States.

  • Tensions continue in Indonesia between Christians and Muslims. Pray for MWC president Mesach Krisetya as he travels to various parts of this country to hold workshops for pastors on how to minister to refugees and others in their congregations who are traumatized by the continuing violence.

  • Leaders of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada face difficult decisions on the future of publishing for their two groups in light of financial difficulties at Mennonite Publishing House, Scottdale, Pa. Pray for wisdom to discern the future as well as work with commitments from the past.
