PRESS RELEASE
Mennonite World Conference
July 10, 2003

Zimbabwe Assembly Registrations Surpass Calcutta '97

One month before the 14th Mennonite World Conference Assembly Gathered to be held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, more than 6,500 Mennonites and Brethren in Christ from around the world have registered for the August 11-17 event.

Each day kept bringing more registrations to the MWC office in Bulawayo. By July 8, international registrations stood at 1770, well beyond the Calcutta '97 figure of 1544. Total registrations for the India conference were 4,550.

Zimbabwe, the host country, has the highest representation with 4,800 registrants. Neighbouring Zambia has 245, only two fewer than Canada with 247. United States, with 706 registrants, has the second highest number of registrants for one country.

Youth (ages 16-24) will be well represented at Assembly Gathered with 660 expected from Zimbabwe along with about 200 internationals. Most of the youth from outside Zimbabwe and several from the host country will participate in a first ever Global Youth Summit for several days before Assembly Gathered. They will discuss their dreams and visions for the church as well as life issues they face.

Registration numbers by continental region on July 8 were: Africa (not including Zimbabwe), 485; Asia, 81; Europe, 156; North America, 973; South and Central America, 75. An additional nearly 50 registrations had arrived but had not yet been processed on July 8.
