PRESS RELEASE
Mennonite World Conference
July 10, 2003

Bulawayo Assembly Will Have Special Events for Women

STRASBOURG, France — Women attending the Mennonite World Conference Assembly Gathered in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, August 11 - 17 will have a choice of events planned especially for them.

Women from every continental region are invited to join African women theologians for a meeting, tentatively set for Tuesday afternoon, August 12. The meeting will focus primarily on three things: ways African Women Theologians can connect with Mennonite and Brethren in Christ women theologians elsewhere; recommendations from last year's African Women Theologians' conference; and a possible on-going structure for African Women Theologians.

Assembly Gathered will feature two 75-minute workshops each afternoon from Tuesday through Saturday, some of which are of particular interest to women. Examples of workshops being planned are: "Gender, female poverty, reproductive health; the role of the Christian woman" (Charlotte Djimbo, Congo); "Domestic violence" (Alix Lozano, Colombia); "The Apostle Paul's women co-workers" and "Women in ministry" (Reta Halteman Finger, USA); and "Teaching peace to children" (Kathryn Aschliman, USA).

The Umtata Women's Theology Group, an interdenominational study group of South African women, will do a workshop on how they produced Bible study booklets on women's and family issues. There are also tentative plans for a dialogue with members of the General Council on women in church leadership.

Exhibit space will be available for African Women Theologians to display publications, pictures, posters and banners.

Assisting with planning for the African Women Theologians gathering at Africa 2003 are Helen Bradburn, Tanzania Mennonite Church and Rebecca Osiro, Kenya Mennonite Church. Lydia Penner (the Netherlands) will be working with other women on various workshops.
