PRESS RELEASE Tragic Accident Takes Lives of BIC Missionary Couple BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe The news that Alvin and Thata Book died in a head-on collision with a truck on the road from Bulawayo to Ekuphileni Bible Institute just days before the Mennonite World Conference Assembly 14 here rocked the Brethren in Christ community. The couple and an EBI student had picked up supplies in Bulawayo for a work team soon to arrive at the school to do repairs. The student was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released. The Books had served the BIC church in various capacities since 1947. In addition to 30 years combined service in Zimbabwe as missionary teachers and one term as bishop for Alvin, the Books also planted churches in Venezuela and the Bronx, New York (USA). They returned here in late July for yet another six months as volunteers. The couple was laid to rest at Matopo Mission. Their son Curtis and his wife Les, missionaries in Bogatá, Colombia, were in town for the MWC General Council meetings and Assembly 14. From a report by Ron Ross, BIC communications |
