PRESS RELEASE Mennonite World Conference September 2, 2003 Guests from Many International Christian Churches and Groups Welcomed at Assembly 14 BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe Representatives from 13 international churches and organizations joined Mennonites and Brethren in Christ at Assembly 14 here August 11 - 17. "We want our people to see that we are part of the larger body of Christ," said Larry Miller, MWC executive secretary, before a welcome speech on opening night. "We want them to see the scope of the world church that has come to stand in solidarity with the people in Zimbabwe." Bringing greetings on opening night from the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, which includes the BICC, Rev. Goodwill Shana said he was honoured and encouraged that MWC chose to come to Zimbabwe in this time of trouble. On the second night, Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube, who received his early education at a BIC mission school, said that Zimbabwe, once the second richest African country, is facing huge difficulties. "God is teaching us something," said Ncube. Monsignor John Radano, representing the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, expressed his joy in efforts to find the unity for which the Lord prayed and common ground with Anabaptists through the Mennonite/Catholic Dialogue. Other Christian groups represented throughout the week were: Anglican Consultative Council, Baptist World Alliance, Disciples Ecumenical Consultative Council, Friends (Quakers) World Committee for Consultation, General Conference of 7th Day Adventists, Lutheran World Federation, Reformed Ecumenical Council, Salvation Army, World Alliance of Reformed Churches, World Convention of Churches of Christ, World Council of Churches, World Evangelical Alliance as well as African Independent Churches and the China Christian Council. Also present at a reception for these fellow Christian leaders preceding the service and joining the procession of dignitaries at the inaugural service were several government leaders.
