PRESS RELEASE Mennonite World Conference June 15, 2004
MENNONITE CHURCH VIETNAM Appeal for Prayer Re: Arrest and detention of pastoral leader and Evangelists of Mennonite Church Vietnam.
TO: Representing the Administrative Committee of Mennonite Church Vietnam, we send our greetings to all believers of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Mennonite Church Vietnam is currently under severe repression: -Four evangelists have been under detention without cause for over three months. -At 3:00 pm on June 8, 2004, Pastor Nguyen Hong Quang, vice president and secretary general of the Mennonite Church Vietnam, was taken into custody by the security police. Police confiscated his entire collection of Church files, all the computers and diskettes, land use records and money in his bedroom, documents and pictures of police attacking and harassing Christians, and other personal papers of the family. We are distressed that our leader has been arrested. We urgently call on Evangelical congregations in Vietnam, the Mennonite World Conference, and Mennonite Churches in all countries to pray for us during this emergency. We ask the Lord to protect us from the calamity facing His church. On behalf of the Administrative Committee of the Vietnamese Mennonite Church, we strongly protest the defamation and slander against Pastor Nguyen Hong Quang and the four evangelists published in the Cong An ("Public Security") newspaper on June 12, 2004 under the headline "Defendant Nguyen Hong Quang and those who obstruct persons carrying out official duties." Thank you in the loving spirit of Jesus Christ. On behalf of the Administrative Committee of the Mennonite Church in Vietnam.
Truong Tri Hien, First Deputy Secretary General (signed) (Received, Tuesday, June 15, 2004) |
