SIDEBAR #2: Vietnam Pastor Visits U.S.

Nguyen Quang Trung, president of the Mennonite Church in Vietnam and pastor of the Mennonite congregation in the Binh Thanh district of Ho Chi Minh City, arrived in the United States on June 22 for a short visit.

The visit comes just two weeks after the arrest of Pastor Nguyen Hong Quang, vice-president and general secretary of the church and pastor of the congregation in District 2 of Ho Chi Minh City.

Pastor Trung and his wife, Ngo Thi Bich, were recently given a gift by their three children to travel to the place of their choice.Their father chose to travel to the eastern United States to visit friends he first learned to know in the 1960s and '70s.

He will spend time with friends in Philadelphia, the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) and Harrisonburg (Virginia), visit area Mennonite institutions, and speak in local churches. He plans to return to Vietnam July 19.

Immediately following Quang's arrest, Trung contacted local Ho Chi Minh authorities asking for Quang's release and sent an appeal to the worldwide Mennonite community calling for prayer on Quang's behalf.

Calling Pastor Quang "a faithful servant of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," Trung requested prayer on behalf of Quang and his wife and three young children.
