NEWS SERVICE August 14, 2007 Vietnamese Conference Meets in Virginia FALLS CHURCH, Virginia (USA) — Representatives of the Vietnamese Mennonite churches in North America met at the 8th biennial conference here June 29 to July 1, hosted by the local congregation, Vietnamese Christian Fellowship. The conference of the North American Vietnamese Mennonite Fellowship was chaired by Rev. Nhien Pham from Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada), who served as the NAVMF president for 10 years. During his tenure NAVMF supported church development in Vietnam, and in 2006 established a Vietnamese congregation in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The guest speaker was Rev. Dr. Thomas Stebbins, former Christian and Missionary Alliance missionary in Vietnam. Stebbins also led a workshop on Evangelism Explosion. Stebbins is well-known across evangelical Vietnamese denominational groups world wide. A special feature was the recognition of Eastern Mennonite Missions personnel who had served in Vietnam from 1957 to 1975. Many of the missionaries attended, among them James Stauffer, who with his wife Arlene, arrived in Vietnam in May 1957, fifty years before. Arlene died in 1985. Donald Sensenig gave a pictorial presentation of the development of the Mennonite churches in Vietnam, which today has thousands of members in more than 100 congregations. Rev. Chau Dang from Calgary, Alberta (Canada) was chosen as the new NAVMF president. Other members of the executive committee are Nhien Pham, Peter Duc Nguyen, Thinh Ho, Hoa Chau, and Tuyen Nguyen. The next conference is scheduled for Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) in 2009. — Luke Martin
