NEWS SERVICE August 31, 2007 Anabaptist Churches to Observe Global Peace Sunday STRASBOURG, France — Mennonite World Conference invites its member churches around the world to observe Peace Sunday on September 23. This is the Sunday closest to the International Day of Peace established by the United Nations in 1981. The UN resolution set September 21 as the permanent date for a day to reaffirm the contribution an international Day of Peace makes “in strengthening the ideals of peace and alleviating tensions and causes of conflict.” The UN also invited a global ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the day along with raising public awareness and celebration of the International Day of Peace. In light of this UN action and the long-standing Anabaptist peace position, MWC's Peace Commission at its meeting in Pasadena, California (USA) in March, 2006 decided to designate the Sunday nearest to September 21 as Peace Sunday. The chosen theme for 2007 is taken from Hebrews 11:1: “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” The commission encouraged global Anabaptist churches who already observe a different day as Peace Sunday to continue their practice but to include global church concerns in their prayers on that day. MWC is sending out material to assist congregations to plan a Peace Sunday worship service and it is also available on the MWC web site: www.mwc-cmm.org. MWC will also continue to observe World Fellowship Sunday in January, an annual celebration within the global Anabaptist family of churches. Worship materials for that day will be sent out to MWC member churches in November.
