NEWS SERVICE September 4, 2007 Young Indonesian Begins Service at UN Office STRASBOURG, France — Mennonite World Conference has appointed Melani Indah Susanti, an Indonesian Mennonite, to serve as MWC's young adult intern in the Mennonite Central Committee United Nations office for the next year. Melani comes from the Siloam congregation of the Muria Christian Church, a Mennonite church in Salatiga, Central Java. She began orientation in August. Office staff in New York City relate to UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at meetings and help to arrange for field staff to interact with UN and NGO workers. They strive to make conflict transformation resources more accessible to international agencies, and advocate on social, economic and political issues on the basis of an Anabaptist understanding of faith. MWC, in collaboration with MCC, has agreed to engage an intern from the global South as a step in representing ethical, humanitarian, and political concerns of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches worldwide. The intern, selected jointly by MWC and MCC, works under the supervision of the director of the MCC UN Liaison Office. Rev. Sylvia Shirk Charles, pastor of the Manhattan Mennonite Fellowship, led in congregational prayers and blessing of Melani at a special service. — Ferne Burkhardt, MWC news editor
