World Assembly: Africa 2003 |
NEWS SERVICE September 4, 2007 Scholarship Leads to Graduation in Congo STRASBOURG, France — Leya Mulabo of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, was among the graduates who received a degree (Licence) in Missiology at the annual graduation ceremonies of the Centre Universitaire de Missiologie in Kinshasa, on Saturday, August 25, 2007. She is a member of the Congo Mennonite Church (CMCo). The graduation speaker was Nzash Lumeya, founder of the school, who is originally from the DRC and currently living in Fresno, California. Mulabo is one of five African women currently receiving scholarships for theological studies through the African Anabaptist Women Theologian’s Committee and Les Amis of Mennonite Women USA. The program is facilitated by Mennonite World Conference. Mulabo was encouraged to study theology by her mentor, Sidonie Swana, a Congolese member of the African Anabaptist Women Theologians committee. Her vision is to pass on the gift she has received by working with young women in the church to build self-esteem and awareness of the needs and opportunities for women in ministry. Women in several African countries studying theology or serving in various ministry roles have been meeting for a number of years. In 2003, at the MWC global assembly in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, they held workshops, addressed the General Council and met with Latin American women. Among significant developments as a result of that 2003 gathering is the relationship between the African Women Theologians and Mennonite Women USA.
