Mennonite World Conference ‘in good shape’ as it faces changes in structure and personnel

News Service
August 18, 2010

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia—“Mennonite World Conference is in good shape. There are no crisis areas. What we agreed to do we have been able to do.”

With those words, Larry Miller, general secretary, summarized the work of MWC to the Executive Committee when it gathered here July 28-August 4, 2010, for its annual meeting.

Most of the members of this Executive Committee were new, having been elected by the MWC General Council in 2009 in Asunción, Paraguay. Charged with overseeing the work of MWC between the triennial sessions of the MWC General Council, the new Executive Committee first spent time becoming acquainted with the structure and work of the organization they oversee.

But they soon became involved in discussion of significant areas for MWC’s ongoing work.

MWC Executive Committee states preference for 2015 world assembly
News Service
August 18, 2010

The Executive Committee of Mennonite World Conference (MWC), while meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from July 28 through August 4, 2010, unanimously stated a preference for holding the next MWC Assembly in the United States, in 2015. The committee also unanimously decided to consider Indonesia as the alternate choice for 2015, if plans for the USA do not work out, and as the first choice for the site of the 2021 assembly.

“We need two items in order to move forward with the USA as the location for our next global gathering,” said Larry Miller, MWC General Secretary. “We need to discuss with the MWC member churches in the USA whether they desire to host the next assembly. And, if they do, we need to do a feasibility study of the site they propose.”
